Utila is located approximately 18 miles from mainland Honduras, bordering the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest reef system in the world. The population is estimated from 4,000 to 6,000 but no accurate count can be agreed upon. This speaks to the unspoiled and still largely undiscovered tropical paradise of this Caribbean island.
It is approximately a 10-15 minute walk from the Eastern Harbor in the center of town to a sandy beach at either end.
Most of the population has settled in town or within a short walk. A mixed heritage of Payan Indians, British, American, and Spanish, make the locals as diverse as the visiting divers and vacationers. You will be comfortable speaking English or Spanish, and the US Dollar is as accepted as the local Limperas.
There are 60 different scuba diving sites around the island and you will see dive boats anchored a short distance from your shore every day. Utila is known as “The Whale Shark Capital of the World”. The whale shark is the world’s largest fish, growing up to 40 ft and in some stories much larger. Whale sharks are filter feeders, virtually harmless and slow moving making them a huge attraction for divers. With the warm Caribbean water, great visibility, coral reef, reef fish, lobsters, turtles, dolphins, rays, king fish, and swordfish, whale sharks are only part of the attraction for diving.
Water Cay, a small island located no more than a 30-minute boat ride from Utila, is home to the famous Sun Jam Festival. You can also hire a boat and spend the day there, in isolation on an uninhabited tropical island. On Utila you can ride horses on the beach, through the jungle, and even visit the caves on Pumpkin Hill. The mainland is a short ferry ride where you can visit the rainforest, the Copan Ruinas, canoe the rivers, white water rapids, or ride zip lines through the canyons.
With just a handful of dives and snorkeling excursions, we have swam with Whale Sharks, Dolphins, a Nurse Shark, Sea Turtles, Eels, Rays, nearly every trip we se something unimaginable. Please share your experience with us.
